Devenport Family and Kinfolks

Notes

Sidney D Pitt

Married at Midland, TX by Justice of the Peace JC Rathbone Imprisoned at El Paso TX about 1895 for shooting a neighboring rancher Story as heard from grandson TD Devenport who said he heard it from his mother Sarah Etta Pitt: Sidney had water disputes with his neighbors and repeatedly warned a Mexican sheepherder to not bring his sheep to water at this particular watering hole. One day he brought his rifle to the watering hole and hid up on a windmill behind the gearmotor and when the Mexican brought his sheep to water, shot him in the back.
Other versions of this story heard mostly from Uncle Cug's side of the family state the shooting was in various forms of self defense, etc.
After getting out of jail Sidney had to leave Texas and started the 3 Circle (?) ranch near Lovington NM. Later ranched near Fort Sumner, then ranched in the Crownpoint area, then went bankrupt in the 1929 crash. Started a chicken ranching operation in Albuquerque NM. His Crownpoint ranch went to the banks who later approaced his son "Cug" Pitt to operate it for them, and Cug eventually wound up owning the entire ranch. Sidney supposedly was a womanizer and in Albuquerque supposedly kept a mistress upstairs in the same house his wife and children lived in. Jennie C. eventually divorced him and moved in with her son Cug at the Crownpoint ranch. Sidney was always quite wealthy and according to his daughter Lou the children were not fond of him though they never lacked for material things in life.

Died fairly early, involved in a car wreck not too long before death with sisters, see Laura "Lou's" story

Notes for SIMEON NEWTON WRIGHT:
Taken from Curry County, New Mexico History
Simeon Newton Wright and Ova True were married in 1905 at Monday, Texas. Sim Wright came to the Territory of New Mexico and filed a homestead near House, N.M. The family, now consisting of two children, Edwin and Ruby, came out in 1907. The trip was made from Knox County, Texas in a covered wagon and the route brought them through Clovis, which then consisted of a railroad, a hardware store, a blacksmith shop and a few houses.
The Wrights built a two room frame house at first, building onto it as the years passed and their family grew. A total of six children were born to them: Edwin (died in 1962), Mrs. Ruby Snider (living at Alamogordo), Nellie (Mrs. Glen Davenport of Winslow, Ariz.), Johnny Wright (died 1977), Minnie (Mrs. Oliver Grabbe of Canyon, Tex.) and Ila Mae (Mrs. Perry Mills of Clovis).
The older children started school at Perry, but they all eventually attended the House school. Sim Wright spent his whole life on the original place farming and ranching. "Everybody liked him," says his daughter, Ila Mae, "and he trusted everyone." Sim Wright died in 1948. (Mr. Wright born July 18, 1880 at Decatur, Tex., died Nov. 18, 1948).
Mrs. Wright continued to operate the farm until 1950. She then sold the farm and moved to Clovis. Ova True Wright, the last surviving member of the True family that came to New Mexico, spent her later years creating hundreds of dolls which she gave away and sold. Born July 17, 1886 in Wise County, Texas, Mrs. Wright died at age 92 on April 8, 1978. She is buried beside her beloved husband in the Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.
In 1944 Ila Mae Wright was a beauty operator for Nell's Beauty Salon which was near J.C. Penny store in Clovis. That was the year she met Perry Mills who was working for Penneys. Perry Mills, born October 13, 1916 at McKinney, Texas, had come to Clovis and had gone to work for Penneys on July 2, 1942. He had come out to visit his uncle R. C. Mills, of Grier community and had stayed. (R. C. Mills was the father of Marvin Mills, owner of the Furniture Mart in Clovis.)
Ila Mae and Perry were married and from this union were born two children: Glennis and Phillip. Perry continues with J.C. Penney Co. and Ila Mae operates the Yucca Beauty Salon.
When Mrs. Sim Wright died in 1978 she had 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
