Born August 29, 1896 in Deerfield Michigan. He has an interesting heritage, his father's family has a history going back 900 years in England. His Maternal Grandfather was a doctor in Oklahoma, Indian Territory, his Grandmother was Cherokee Indian. He was 5th in a family of 7, 4 brothers & 2 sisters. As a child he had a fine Tenor voice, his mother played the piano and they performed at every opportunity. When he was 5 years old he had an injury to his left eye that left it nearly blind. This held him back in school for a while, but being a very bright observant boy, he learned a lot about many things. His father raised and raced horses, so he learned all their habits and how to care for them. His uncle charley was his hero, a frenchman who taught him al those beautiful folk songs & ballads he used to sing. He peddled papers on a route, also on a street corner in Toledo, until he was old enough to vote. At 17 he ran away from home and worked in a lunber camp in Northern Michigan, his job was caring for the horses. His family didn't know where he was. One morning at 2:00 they were awakened by someone playing squaredance music on the piano. That was a happy homecoming he had been gone more than a year. He took a full time job at the Butter Krust Bakery. Soon after that the first World War came along. One by one all of his friends went into the army. He was eager to join them, but after 35 physical exams and rejections (because he was blind in one eye) he became discouraged. He thought he couldn't bear the disappointment alone so decided to get married. She was not a chile bride, she was 17 1/2 years old. He worked at Armour Company in Toledo, but during the flu epidemic in 1918, he was one of the victims. While he was in the hospital, the war ended. He went back to work but was too weak to do much so they gave him a gun & told him to shoot rats in the warehouse. Before long the soldiers started coming home, he lost his job to the man who left it to go to war. After working at several truck driving jobs with no future, the responsibility of two children he decided to leave Toledo. First to Florida then to Colorado. That is a Beautiful place to live but not much work, he was homesick to see his parents so back to Michigan two years later.... just in time to get in on the ground floor of an oil boom. Living was good, he worked hard and played hard. After a few years the drilling petered out so he went into the garage business. While working on a car a piece of steel flew into his good left eye, he lost his eye & was blind for two years. Then the sight came back in the right eye, but never so he could see very good. Eventually he was able to go back to work but it was very difficult and the depression had settled in, that was the end of the boom there. There was an oil boom in another town in southern Michigan so he thought he would try that. It was wild and wooly, that too ended in a few years. World War II came along. The two older children were grown up, the son went into the Air Corps and the daughter to beauty school. The other two were in High School. He went to work on a pipe-line in Calgary, Canada, but the family couldn't go along, this was no place for them to live. Two teenagers was more than their mother could handle so he bought a gas station and automobile business so he could be at home. After a few very successful years he sold out and bought a farm. After 9 months that was for sale... just came out even financially. He worked in a factory for a few years. Then back to Colorado to work as a Lab Technician in the General Purpose Experimental Lab of the Glenn L. Martin Company. In 1962 he endured the greatest sorrow at the death of his eldest daughter. Later that year he retired and moved to Canon City Colorado. He said those were the happiest years of his life. In 1965 he suffered a severe heart attack and one week later a complete heart block. Recovery was slow but complete, he still had trouble breathing and thought a lower altitude would be better..... So back to Michigan again, but finally settled in Hicksville in 1969 (nearly 10 years ago). This is the longest time he has ever lived in one house in all of his 82 years.
Fred was cremated and his ashes were sent to Hicksville, Ohio to be with Winona.
