Dear Sister[1]
Your letter came a few days ago – was so glad to hear from you.
I have written you several times and could hear nothing from you so I thought you were gone or had forgotten me –
No I have not heard from Lou[2] or brother[3] in about (?) years I don’t know where they are – whether they are living or not.
I was sorry to hear you were never well I have not been well for over two years myself. I am bothered with the asthma and cough nearly all the time. I have awfully bad spells at times. Then I get so I can do a little house work.
My children are all married but three – I have one girl[4] and two boys[5][6] – my oldest boy single is away at school now.
We sold our farm and are now living in town – I don’t like town. I want to go back to the country again and think I will some day –
I have sixteen grandchildren I guess I am ahead of you along that line. Ain’t I. Well I will close. I want to hear from you often. I was thinking all my people had forgotten me.
With love to you and family

I remain
your sister

Harrison Monroe Newberry

My mama knew her Uncle Granville really well, and she told me this. Supposedly, one of Granville's brothers was a horse thief, and was arrested and jailed in New Mexico. They were gonna hang him for it, so Granville helped to break him out of jail. She said that brother went on to California, and then she thought the family ended up in Vegas.
This would likely be Harrison Monroe. I've talked to some of his great-granddaughters, and they thought it might be true, but didn't know for sure.
